Family Promise of Gwinnett provides temporary housing for screened homeless families by using host churches to provide meals and hosts at the Promise Haven Homeless Shelter on Highway 124 in Lawrenceville (only 8 miles from SJN Church).  The accepted families are in the approximately 90 day program to help them end their homelessness.   Meals and housing are provided as well as educational programs on financial literacy and budgeting, parenting, and job/career skills.  The shelter can host up to 12 people or three families at one time.  A family must have children in Gwinnett schools to be considered for acceptance.  Also, no families with drug issues or domestic violence backgrounds are accepted.

SJN became a volunteer church with Family Promise in 2015 under the leadership of Aida Galarza and Mary Moorman. In 2018, St. Stephen’s Family Promise Ministry became a support parish for SJN host weeks.  We typically serve as a host church at Promise Haven two or three times per year.  Several volunteers are needed the weeks that SJN hosts.

Our next two St. John Neumann host weeks are the weeks of March 3 - 10, 2024 and October 20 - 27, 2024.

Other opportunities to volunteer exist during "Community Weeks" when there is no local church hosting.  If you are interested in getting on the email list to assist during community weeks, please email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. Mission Statement: As grateful stewards of God’s gifts, we at St. John Neumann Church desire to live our faith by assisting homeless families sponsored by Family Promise of Gwinnett, Inc.
Our ministry to homeless families will include:

  • Providing shelter for homeless families identified by Family Promise of Gwinnett, Inc. at Promise Haven for a week (Sunday evening through Sunday morning).
  • Providing meals and family needs through gift card purchases during our host week.
  • Providing evening hosts, day hosts (Saturday) and overnight hosts (Friday and Saturday) during our host week.

Many volunteers are needed the weeks that SJN hosts. VIRTUS training (including an Archdiocese of Atlanta background check) & Family Promise volunteer training (offered in person or online) is required for volunteers with direct contact with the families. Volunteers providing meals are not required to have training or a background check.
